The History
The Stages of development of the TB service of the Republic have 3 main periods:
– Before antibacterial;
– Soviet (formation of phthisiatric system);
– Post-Soviet (introduction of new anti-tuberculosis programs).
The founder and the first director of the Institute was the honored worker of science of the KASSR, Doctor of Science, Professor, Vasily Ivanovich Zyuzin. He published more than 120 scientific papers, 3 monographs. He prepared 3 doctors of medical sciences, 14 candidates for doctors of medical sciences.

The Researches of 1950 - 1960 - ies:
At 1954 M. Kaftanovskaya noted that the war and the post-war devastation had a particular impact on the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis, therefore to combat this infection finely, it is necessary to find the newest powerful medicines, as well as timely detection and treatment of early forms of tuberculosis.
One can see the dynamics of pathomorphism of tuberculosis among adolescents by using the example of E. Trailikh's works of 1956. In the post - war years, chronic fibro-cavernous tuberculosis prevailed among adolescents, and the primary goal of phthisiotricians was to prevent open, cavernous forms of tuberculosis in young men. The use of streptomycin and Pasca against the background of artificial pneumothorax and cauterization of adhesions provided significant efficacy in the treatment of this contingent of patients.
In 1966 worked one doctor and 24 candidates of medical sciences, whereas in 1962 worked 4 candidates only. The Institute developed topical issues of epidemiology and organizational forms of anti - tuberculosis activities in Kazakhstan, surgical treatment of advanced forms of tuberculosis, diagnosis, clinic and pathophysiology of tuberculosis. The epidemiology of tuberculosis was studied in various climatic and geographical areas of the Republic and the dynamics of these indicators was studied with a view to developing the basis for planning TB control.

Scientific flourishing of the Institute of Tuberculosis:
1971 - 1982 years were characterized as the stage of the most extensive and effective fight against tuberculosis in the Republic, which is connected with the name of the director of the institute, Professor A. Terlikbaev.
Over these years, the low-power institute has turned into the largest in the USSR research, organizational and methodological and treatment and counseling center to combat tuberculosis. New buildings were built; were opened offices and laboratories equipped with the latest equipment. Scientific research was devoted to epidemiology, clinic and treatment of tuberculosis in adults and children, which were carried out through complex expeditions to various regions of the Republic.
In the period between 1963 – 1982 years, 13 doctoral dissertations were prepared and defended in the institute, more than 122 published works were published, and 10 monographs were published. With the arrival of A. Terlikbaev, surgical treatment of tuberculosis began to develop widely not only in the institute, but also in regional dispensaries of the Republic.

Research on the organization of anti-tuberculosis services:
At 1972 G. Melkumov revealed in own doctoral Research on the Epidemiology of tuberculosis at the industrial enterprises of Kazakhstan, infection enterprises personnel - up to 92%, and he installed a high disability due to tuberculosis, he identified the needs in the employment of these persons.
In 1971, L. Shefer wrote his doctoral work: "Epidemiology of tuberculosis in Kazakhstan and the economic effectiveness of anti-tuberculosis measures," already in those years he was carried out economic calculations of long-term inpatient and outpatient treatment of patients with TB, which is actually today also.
K. Kurmanbaev was the chief physician of the regional anti-TB dispensary of the Kokshetau branch of the TB institute, by bringing a major contribution to the establishment (between 1974 and 1982 he defended his Ph.D. and doctoral dissertations). Under his leadership were defended six candidate dissertations and a doctoral dissertation, two monographs were written. He conducted research on the epidemiology of tuberculosis in Kazakhstan, proposed chemoprophylaxis to livestock keepers, and studied the zoonotic aspects of tuberculosis. The results of studying the zoonotic aspects of tuberculosis formed the basis for a number of important decisions and decisions related to strengthening the fight against tuberculosis in agricultural areas.

The Phthisiatric Science began to form in the republic gradually, as a section of clinical medicine that studies the causes of the onset of the disease, the patterns of spread and the mechanism of tuberculosis development, methods of its prevention, diagnosis and treatment. All conditions were created for the development and development of research work at the Institute. A. Terlikbaev, L Shefer and G. Munaybasova began to developed organizational forms of fighting tuberculosis in rural areas and industrial enterprises. Y. Blagodarniy, L. Shefer and Z. Khazhibaeva have been conducted fundamental research on the epidemiology of tuberculosis in Kazakhstan. Y. Blagodarniy studied the zoonotic aspects of tuberculosis. A. Naubetyarova and K. Turkeebaeva were studied clinical and morphological issues of tuberculosis caused by bovine type causative agent. K. Maskeev and E. Chenskikh have been done a lot of research on epidemiology, clinic and treatment of lymphoid and bone-joint tuberculosis. E. Tsallagova and S. Chagirova studied the function of respiratory and circulatory organs in tuberculosis patients. T. Klyshev, M. Kharsun and G. Seitzhanov investigated the immunology and biochemistry of tuberculosis. G. Vvedenskaya, A. Kulikova and V. Dubinskaya investigated the improvement of X-ray diagnostics.

Research works of A.Terlikbaev and A. Djunusbekov brought the great importance for the development of phthisic-surgical assistance to the population.
In times of "stagnation" tuberculosis began to be attributed to the diseases of the past, the specialty "phthisiotrician" lost its relevance. However, at the end of the 20th century, after a long period of relative prosperity, the global economic crisis and the collapse of the USSR contributed to a sharp deterioration in the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis in all post-Soviet countries, including Kazakhstan, in the 1990s. There were again sharply progressive forms of tuberculosis, reminiscent of "fleeting consumption", resistant and super-resistant forms.
Thanks to the strong political and financial support of the Head of the State of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Government and the Ministry of Health, that the fight against tuberculosis is a priority in the state.
The Director of the National Center of the RK, Doctor of Science, Professor A. Zhangireev began the epoch of a new round of fighting against tuberculosis with the active work. He initiated the assignment of the status of the National Center for TB Prevention in the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Institute of Tuberculosis. For the first time, he implemented a pilot project on tuberculosis control in the most epidemic unfavorable region of the republic with the involvement of the “HOPE” project, and then he extended the “DOTS” strategy to the entire territory of Kazakhstan.
Professor S. Ismailov became the successor and loyal follower of this strategy, who headed the NCTT from 1999-2000 and from 2007-2009. Later, he initiated the creation of a training center on the basis of the National Center of the RK, a strategy for treating patients with broad drug resistance.
From 2000 to 2007 Professor G. Rakishev (Corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences), trained a whole galaxy of phthisiatric staff, he was at the helm of the TB service of the Republic. G. Rakishev began to develop the New Strategy for TB Control "DOTS Plus" in the Republic of Kazakhstan, he was improved the system for tracking TB patients, and he initiated the creation of the first specialized peer-reviewed journal Phthisiopulmonology and became the chairman of the editorial committee.

From 2010 to 2016 T. Abildaev was a head of NNCT (Professor, Doctor of Medical Science). He has been reconstructed contributing to the prevention of occupational morbidity and the strengthening of infection control measures, the newest automated system of supply and exhaust ventilation, he has been realized the creation of the gateway system of the center. He was created the basis of the center, the faculty of advanced training not only for phthisiotricians of the republic, but also for PHC staff, where many years of experience are and the latest achievements of the National Center of the RK transferred. The director provides the clinical base of NCTT of the RK, where students of the chair of Phthisiopulmonology of KazNMU named after S. Asfendiyarov and the course of phthisiology of the KRMU, AGIUV.

At the moment, the NSCP has more than 600 employees. The center has a great potential of highly qualified medical personnel. 88 practical doctors work at the Institute, of which 4 have a doctorate in medicine and 16 are candidates of medical sciences. More than half of doctors have the highest and first medical categories.
Professors G. Smailova, K. Yerimbetov and K. Abdukarimov lead the implementation of the newest technologies on molecular-genetic diagnosis of MDR tuberculosis; they play an important role in the development and maintenance of scientific and innovative activities of the National Scientific Center for Phthisiopulmonology, on conservative and surgical treatment of the hardest contingent of tuberculosis patients.
Today in the Center there is a whole complex of modern equipment for the provision of highly specialized medical care.
The scientific activity of the center does not lose its relevance at present.
The scientific and research activity of the Center is managed by MD, DMedSci, Professor Lyazzat Yeraliyeva.
A number of clinical studies have been carry out at the center in over the past 4 years:
Now is clinical study of the effectiveness and safety of the dispersed preparation "Etambutol D" and the dispersed preparation "Izoniazid". Together with the RSE "Research Institute for Biological Safety", the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the "Influenza Research Institute" of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation conducted a randomized, blind, placebo-controlled study of the intranasal TB / FLU-04L intranasal vaccine in BCG vaccinated healthy volunteers, also a study was made of the effectiveness of this vaccine for specific immunotherapy of pulmonary tuberculosis. Jointly with JSC Scientific Center for Anti-Infective Drugs is randomized placebo-controlled studies of the safety, therapeutic effectiveness of the oral form of the drug FS-1 in resistant forms of pulmonary tuberculosis were conducted.
For 2017 - 2019, a scientific and technical program is planned on the topic "Development of innovative methods for detection, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and tuberculosis with drug resistance in the Republic of Kazakhstan".
All beginnings and improvements are impossible without the strategic department directing the activities of TB programs - the organization and planning department of anti-tuberculosis activities. The department was in charge of K. Baimukhanova for 18 years - a skilled organizer and demanding to himself and leader of people. In the department are being formed programs of interdepartmental collaboration on tuberculosis problems; constant improvement of the regulatory and legal framework is being carried out in all directions of the TB service.
Since 2015 Jazybekova Panagul is headed the department of epidemiology, organization and planning of anti-tuberculosis activities.
The center organizes a monitoring and evaluation group that monitors the activities of TB organizations, PHC networks and departments in all areas annually, with the development of the necessary recommendations to improve morbidity and mortality.
Today the NSCP of RK is directing not only the administrative and command organ of phthisiology of Kazakhstan.
Today the NSCP of RK is a modern medical and diagnostic base of the Republic, an extensive network of Para-clinical units. A new generation of TB doctors honors piously the memory of their predecessors and translates their ideas and rich experience into modern practice.
